Behavioral Targeting Beat Firmographics 2:1 for Tapcheck

Title match tells you who fits your ICP. It doesn't tell you who's paying attention right now. Here's what happened when Tapcheck measured the difference.

Most B2B targeting still runs on a simple assumption: if the title matches and the company matches, the audience is right.

It's a reasonable assumption. It's also incomplete.

A CFO at a 2,000-person company fits your ICP whether he or she is actively researching your category or hasn't thought about it in eighteen months. Same title. Same firmographics. Wildly different value to your pipeline.

Tapcheck decided to test that gap directly.

The Challenge

Tapcheck's demand gen team was sharpening focus on two goals at once: brand awareness at the top and lead capture further down.

The constraint was the one every demand gen team knows. They needed to reach decision-makers who matched their target titles without leaning on broad-reach tactics that burn budget on people who will never buy.

Title-based targeting could get them into the right rooms. It couldn't tell them which rooms were warm.

So they ran a head-to-head: behavioral signal-based targeting against standard demographic reach, same campaign, same period.

Why SmartBrief

Traditional targeting builds an audience from static attributes; title, company size, industry, revenue band. Useful, but it's a snapshot of who someone is, not evidence of what they're doing.

SmartBrief's ICP+ layers first-party behavioral engagement signals on top of those firmographics. The resulting audience is made up of professionals who both fit the ICP and are actively consuming content in the relevant category.

That's the whole thesis: fit plus intent, not fit alone.

Two other factors made the test practical rather than theoretical. A competitive lead guarantee price kept the downside contained. Optional profiling questions let Tapcheck narrow the audience further than title alone ever could.

The Solution

The program ran four coordinated plays across the SmartBrief network:

  • A dedicated email send to a CFO audience list
  • Newsletter display impressions layered with ICP+ targeting
  • Newsletter sponsorships in a CHRO-focused publication
  • A webinar ad paired with a dedicated landing page

The mix mattered. Dedicated sends drive depth. Impressions build reach across the buying committee. And the landing page gave engaged readers somewhere specific to go, not a form buried on a homepage.

The Results

Open rates on the dedicated send came in at more than 2x benchmark.

Behaviorally targeted audiences converted at roughly twice the rate of traditional targeting.

That's a clean read. Same offer, same creative quality, same market. The variable that changed was how the audience was built.

Three secondary findings are worth attention:

  • Native Featured Content outperformed standard display. Contextual placement inside editorial beat interruption-style units.
  • The webinar ad drove multi-contact engagement and strong page views. Multiple people from the same accounts engaged, which is exactly what you want when you're selling into a committee rather than an individual.
  • The campaign reached net-new contacts Tapcheck hadn't touched. Not re-engagement of a known database. New names, added straight to nurture.

"The core value was precision: SmartBrief's targeting gave us direct access to our exact ICP. Rather than casting a wide net, we were able to put content in front of the specific roles we needed to reach.”
